Škoda Group strengthens its position in India. CEO Petr Novotný negotiates the further development of cooperation with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi

Škoda Group systematically strengthens its presence at strategically important Indian market, which is one of the fastest-growing in the world and represents a key opportunity for European industry. The next step in this strategy is a meeting between Petr Novotný, CEO of Škoda Group, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which took place in the presence of the Czech Ambassador to New Delhi, Eliška Žigová. Petr Novotný thus has become the first CEO of a Czech company to hold direct talks with the Prime Minister of India.

This meeting at the highest political level confirms Škoda Group’s ambition to play an active role in this region in the long term. At the same time, it represents a significant shift in economic relations between the Czech Republic and India, marking a milestone not only for Škoda Group but for the entire Czech industry.

“Meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi is a great honour for me and, at the same time, a clear confirmation of the role that Czech industry, and Škoda Group in particular, can play in the development of a modern, efficient transport system and sustainable mobility in India. Our ambition is to establish a long-term presence in India, contribute to the development of local industry and supply advanced technologies that will support efficient and environmentally friendly transport solutions,” says Petr Novotný, CEO of Škoda Group.

Petr Novotný views India as a strategic market for the Škoda Group and has presented his plans in this regard to Prime Minister Modi: “In India, we want to develop not only our manufacturing and supply capabilities but also share our know-how through initiatives such as the Škoda Academy. Product localization and the development of local partnerships, which have the potential to grow and expand further, are also key elements for us. In addition to our vehicles, we see a great opportunity in the field of digitalization, which the Indian government actively supports—and this is precisely where we can offer our advanced digital technologies for more efficient public mobility. We see an opportunity to build a strong hub in India not only for the local market but also for exports to other regions. We believe that further deepening of business cooperation, including the development of trade agreements, will create a solid foundation for long-term growth and mutual success.”

“This face-to-face meeting is crucial for the future development of Czech-Indian relations, and we are delighted that it could take place. We believe it will provide a significant impetus for other Czech companies to enter the Indian market,” says Czech Ambassador Eliška Žigová.

In recent months, India has become one of Škoda Group’s key strategic markets. Group has established a partnership with Tata AutoComp Systems, part of Tata Group, focused on developing the production of electric traction systems and components for rail vehicles directly on the Indian market. This collaboration supports the ‘Make in India’ initiative and reflects Škoda Group’s long-term commitment to contributing to the development of India’s industrial and technological capabilities.

These activities were followed by the meeting with Prime Minister Modi himself. During the meeting, both sides discussed opportunities for further deepening cooperation and investment in the areas of modern and sustainable mobility, the development of railway infrastructure and industrial partnerships, in line with India’s long-term infrastructure and economic priorities.

“A partnership with a local player is essential in India. It is not just about legislation, but also about knowledge of the market, local supply chains, regulations and business culture. A strong local partner enables a foreign company to scale its business, participate in major projects and build trust with customers and public institutions. During four years I lived and worked in India, I gained a great deal of knowledge for the successful development of such cooperation,” says Petr Novotný.

India represents one of the most dynamic markets in the world, with significant investment in railway infrastructure, urban transport systems and sustainable mobility solutions. The meeting confirmed the strong potential for Czech companies to participate in these projects, particularly in areas involving high added value and advanced engineering know-how.

For the Czech Republic, cooperation at this level reinforces economic diplomacy and opens new opportunities for industrial cooperation, technology transfer and long-term partnerships in one of the world’s most promising markets.
