Škoda Group and Microvast to produce battery systems for public transport

Škoda Group has entered a strategic partnership with Microvast. Together with this global leader in advanced battery technologies, they will develop and manufacture next-generation battery systems for public transport vehicles, primarily for battery-electric multiple units (BEMUs).

“At Škoda Group, we are committed to developing our own battery technology as the cornerstone of our future solutions for zero-emission mobility. The partnership with Microvast combines our in-depth knowledge of transport systems with their cutting-edge battery innovations. This will enable us to manufacture highly competitive products made in Europe. This collaboration not only strengthens our own vehicle portfolio, but also paves the way for offering advanced battery systems to other manufacturers in the industry,” said Jaromír Šilhánek, President of Business Units at Škoda Group.

The partnership combines Microvast’s technological know-how in the design and manufacture of battery cells, modules and packs with the Škoda Group’s many years of experience in the design and certification of vehicles for rail and trolleybus transport. In the first phase of the collaboration, both companies will focus on developing batteries for use on the railways, specifically for the Škoda Group’s new battery units. The design of these battery systems will also allow them to be used in other types of public transport vehicles, such as electric buses.

“Our partnership with Škoda Group represents a significant step towards rail transport that is sustainable thanks to advanced battery technology. It underlines the commitment of both partners to deliver a safe, reliable and long-lasting battery solution that will enable our customers to decarbonise their fleets and shape the mobility of tomorrow,” said Yang Wu, Chief Executive Officer of Microvast.

Goal: first prototype in 2026

The goal of both parties is to present the first vehicle with the new battery system prototype by the end of 2026. With this step, the Škoda Group is confirming its long-term commitment to zero-emission mobility and energy-efficient transport.
