New battery-powered trolleybuses from Škoda Group to be delivered to Ostrava

Dopravní podnik Ostrava (DPO) and Škoda Group signed a framework agreement for the delivery of up to 16 new Škoda 26Tr battery trolleybuses. Of these, 14 vehicles are ordered in the basic contractual performance, and two vehicles are part of an option. The first trolleybuses will be delivered in 2027, and the total value of the contract is more than CZK 268 million.

The new trolleybuses with modern carbody will be two-axle, fully low-floor and air-conditioned. They will be equipped with a modern information and ticketing system. For the safety of passengers and drivers, the vehicles will be equipped with a camera system. Thanks to traction batteries, the trolleybuses have a wireless range of at least 15 kilometres, which will enable them to reliably serve sections without the catenary, minimise the impact on passengers during closures and detours, and extend operations to new city districts – all without any emissions.

“Ostrava has long been one of the most progressive cities in the field of urban transport, and we greatly appreciate the continuation of our cooperation. The new 26Tr trolleybuses with battery range will bring greater flexibility, comfort and operational efficiency to both transport operators and passengers,” says Karel Majer, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Škoda Electric in the Škoda Group.

“The advantage is that the vehicle can also serve streets where there is no catenary, while remaining fully electric, i.e. quiet and emission-free. Outside the trolleybus lines, the trolleybus switches to battery power and runs as an electric bus,” says Daniel Morys, CEO and Chairman of the Board of Directors of DPO, adding: “The new trolleybuses will also be equipped with air conditioning throughout the vehicle and a camera system, including a collision camera. In this way, we want to ensure maximum comfort and safety for passengers.”

Trolleybus operation in Ostrava is among the most significant in the Czech Republic

The DPO currently operates 75 trolleybuses, 58 of which are Škoda vehicles (23× 26Tr, 17× 27Tr, 18× 36Tr). The new delivery of trolleybuses will complement the existing fleet and contribute to its unification and easier maintenance. The Ostrava trolleybus network has 12 lines in normal (non-exclusive) operation – nine daytime lines (101–109) and three night lines (111–113). The network serves key transfer hubs, including the Main Railway Station, Miloš Sýkora Bridge and Hranečník Terminal.

Offensive in Škoda trolleybus deliveries in the Czech Republic and abroad

In recent months, Škoda Group has significantly strengthened its activities in the supply of trolleybuses, confirming its leading position in the European market for zero-emission mobility. For example, it has signed a framework agreement for the supply of up to 20 32Tr trolleybuses for Jihlava, 14 of which will be battery-powered. In Chomutov and Jirkov, it will supply up to 8 articulated 33Tr battery trolleybuses. It has also recently concluded contracts for the delivery of up to 31 32Tr and 33Tr battery trolleybuses for Hradec Králové and a framework agreement for the city of Zlín for up to 60 trolleybuses. At the same time, it is actively bidding for contracts in other cities in the Czech Republic.

A significant international success is the contract for 52 trolleybuses for Esslingen, Germany, and 40 trolleybuses for the Estonian city of Tallinn. All these contracts confirm the confidence of Czech and foreign transport companies in the quality and reliability of Pilsen products.
