Replacement of the Control System of 263 Locomotives by ZSSK

The aim of the project is to enable the operation of 263 series locomotives (originally 70E1) produced by Železnična spoločnost Slovensko, a. s. (ZSSK) from the control car of the 951 series of the newly supplied push-pull units produced by Skoda Vagonka in Ostrava.

The original main transformer, traction motors and pneumatic switches of the travel direction and travel-brake mode remained in place. Traction converters, the traction drive controller and auxiliary drive converters were completely replaced. The main modifications include the replacement of the original control and management system with a system that uses elements tested on electric units of the 671 ZSSK series. The original controllers of main drives and auxiliary drives, the original traction converters and all other elements of electrical equipment, including the original speed controller and slip protection, remained in place. The assignment included the requirement for the locomotive control to remain unchanged by the modifications, if possible. Remote control is provided via WTB.

Basic characteristics of POLL’s participation in the project:

  • Analysis of the functionality of the original control and management system of the 70E1 locomotive
  • Design and manufacture of a specific CAN module converting the signal of the relative traction to be compatible with the original circuits of the locomotive
  • Creation of an application programme for the control and management system

Main milestones of the project:

  • 03/2010 – Work on the project began
  • 03-07/2010 – Analysis, design and implementation of software of the locomotive’s control and management system
  • 05-07/2010 – Development of a specific CAN module for entering the relative thrust
