Air Conditioning and Heating System for Škoda 29T Ostrava and 30T Bratislava Trams

The air conditioning and heating system for Škoda 29T and 30T trams is designed for cooling, ventilation, heating and conditioning of the air supplied to the passenger compartment and the driver's cabin in the tram. This project reflects our experience with the production and operation of the first generation of Poll air conditioning systems in 28T trams. This is one of the things that made it possible to increase the heating and cooling capacity while maintaining the same weight.

The system consists of three main devices:

  • KLMT29S passenger compartment air conditioning units
  • KLMT29K air conditioning units for the driver’s cabin
  • four types of KVA-03 heating units

The interior heating units have been upgraded to a higher level, as each unit contains a contactless switch and its own control unit with a CAN line, which enables improved control of thermal comfort in the vehicle.  The air conditioning unit in the passenger compartment and the driver’s cabin are equipped with integrated compact power converters with galvanic isolation and inverters.  This allows them to be powered directly from the 600 V or 750 V DC traction network.  The cooling of the converters is active, using the air flowing through the air conditioning unit.  This solution makes it possible to minimise dimensions, saving space on the vehicle’s roof and resulting in better weight distribution.
